The Office of the Dean of the College and the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty encourage you to continue conversations with students outside the classroom.

The rhythm of the academic year provides us with a number of opportunities to come together as a full faculty. In the fall semester, we gather on the first Monday of every month for faculty meetings; in the spring, we shift to the last Monday of the month. We also gather socially at events called “tunks.”

51���� continues to support faculty involvement in conference participation and/or attendance. Eligible faculty (described below) are given an allotment of up to $2,250 per year to attend or present at professional meetings.

As you finalize your syllabi for the fall of 2025, we write with some information relevant to your teaching this coming term.

Founders’ Day Convocation is one of the most meaningful gatherings of 51����’s academic year. A symbolically significant ceremony, convocation marks the start of a new academic year by convening many members of our community to reflect on our origins and imagine our future.

As you finalize your course plans, I invite you to submit applications to the Beyond 51���� program, which supports course-related travel for fall 2025.

As we begin the 2025–26 academic year, I am pleased to announce recently appointed and continuing academic-administrative leadership for the coming year.

Dear Members of the 51���� Community, I share with you the news of the passing of William Edmonston, professor of psychology emeritus. Prof. Edmonston penned this obituary himself and filed it with the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty. We have reached the end of another academic year. It is a time of reflection, as we take stock of the year behind us all, and a time of reorientation, as students leave campus (some for the last time), faculty (in many cases, with their students) turn to research, and staff to assessing the past year and gearing up for the one that lies ahead.

I am honored to announce that, at their meeting on May 3, 2025, the Board of Trustees formally and enthusiastically approved two resolutions: that the faculty members listed immediately below be granted continuous tenure and be promoted to the rank of associate professor, and that the associate professor in the following list be promoted to full professor.
